The Economic EmPowerment for the Intersex Community (EPIC) Project
EPIC Project is a transformative 24-month initiative jointly implemented by Key Watch Ghana and Intersex Movement Ghana to advance the economic empowerment, social inclusion, and well-being of intersex persons in Ghana.
The project was conceived in response to findings from the 2022–2023 national study on the lived realities of intersex persons, which revealed persistent barriers to education, employment, entrepreneurship, financial services, and economic participation. These challenges often result in poverty, social exclusion, dependence, and limited opportunities for individuals, as well as their parents and caregivers
EPIC seeks to break these barriers by creating pathways to economic self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods. Through vocational and technical skills development, entrepreneurship training, financial literacy, mentorship, cooperative development, social enterprise support, and advocacy, the project will equip intersex persons with the knowledge, resources, and confidence needed to access decent work, build businesses, and participate meaningfully in Ghana’s economy.
Grounded in the principles of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the project promotes decent work, equal opportunity, non-discrimination, social protection, skills development, and economic justice. EPIC recognizes that every person deserves the right to productive employment, fair economic opportunities, safe working conditions, and the freedom to pursue livelihoods with dignity and respect

The project also contributes directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
SDG 1 – No Poverty:
By increasing income-generating opportunities and reducing economic vulnerability.
SDG 4 – Quality Education:
Through skills development, vocational training, and lifelong learning opportunities
SDG 5 – Gender Equality:
By promoting inclusion and equal opportunities for persons with diverse sex characteristics
SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth:
By supporting entrepreneurship, job creation, financial inclusion, and decent employment.
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals:
Through collaboration among community organizations, development partners, institutions, and stakeholders
Through EPIC, participants will gain access to market-relevant skills, sustainable livelihood opportunities, mentorship networks, cooperative structures, and strategic investment pathways that strengthen their economic resilience. Beyond financial empowerment, the project seeks to nurture leadership, self-confidence, community participation, and social belonging.
EPIC is more than an economic empowerment initiative, it is a movement toward dignity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. It envisions a Ghana where intersex persons are empowered to realize their full potential, contribute to national development, and thrive as active, productive, and respected members of society
Together, we are building a future where no one is left behind, and where economic empowerment becomes a pathway to equality, dignity, and sustainable development for all.
